MAINE COAST

                            HEADING EAST TO PORTLAND ME

States we drove through & each had their own beauty! Sorry I don't take pictures along the way of each state we travel through...the reason? I don't want to see my journey through a lens.

Our 1st time here! We now can say we have been in Portland OR & Portland ME

The shoreline looked like it had huge driftwood but it was slate.

The Atlantic Ocean is beautiful. We sat in the sun & listened to the waves crushing in the rocks!

This was a narrow cliff hanging out into the ocean

Thats right..kids out there with no fear. Just to walk out there on the jagged rocks is stupid!!

Portland Head Light
One of the most FAMOUS lighthouses in the world is celebrating the 225th anniversary.
It's the second oldest lighthouse in the country, was commissioned by George
Washington. The cost was $1500 & powered by 16 whale oil lamps. Now the light is an electric beacon rotating 24 hours a day that can be seen 24 nautical miles out to sea.The original tower measured 72 feet from base to lantern deck. The first keeper was Capt. Joseph Greenleaf, a Revolutionary War veteran, who received the right to live in the keeper's house & fish and farm in the vicinity in lieu of a salary. However he was ready to quit because he couldn't afford to stay on, so then they paid $160 a year to keep him on.
Unfortunately it was covered with scaffold due to a new paint job

In 1849, Maine's Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote a poem entitled, "The Lighthouse", which historians believe was inspired by Longfellow's many trips to Portland Head Light often visiting with the lightkeeper.

PORTLAND BREAKWATER LIGHT "BUG LIGHT"

This Lighthouse was south from Portland Head Light. It was built in 1855 as a wooden structure, but the breakwater was extended & a new lighthouse was constructed in 1875 with plates of cast iron. The architect design came from Athens Greece. It's one  of Maine's most elegant lighthouse

LOBSTER ROLL
Our first time eating one & the cost of this ...$19 for one roll! We shared but it wasn't worth the money! BUT that's what you're suppose to do when you're a tourist!

This restaurant is called Rosa Linda's .....must be named after my buddy Linda Homrich & me! One problem... the menu must only have pizza & popcorn because that's about all we cook! I forgot Margaritas too!

It's been great here in southern Maine! The coast is unbelievable!
Now it's time to move up the coast to Acadia National Park!
